At Donnellon McCarthy, we care about more than our bottom line. We believe that good businesses support and invest in the communities they serve.
As part of our own commitment to helping others, we are proud sponsors of The Grant C. Alexander Scholarship Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
Considered the most commonly occurring congenital fatal condition in children, DMD affects one out of every 3500 boys worldwide. It involves a child’s muscles growing abnormally, which leads to severe loss of function as he ages.
DMD has three phases:
This phase occurs when the child is 6-12 years old. Typical symptoms include problems with posture, frequent falling and increasing muscle weakness.
When children who suffer from DMD reach age 8-14, they typically lose the ability to walk.
After children with DMD reach 15 years old or older, they start having respiratory problems. They can also experience heart problems. More likely than not, kids with DMD will not live past the age of 20.
The Grant C. Alexander Scholarship Foundation encourages everyone to get screened for DMD before they start a family. In 70% of cases of this disease, women are carriers of DMD but rarely show symptoms. In these cases, male children have a 50% chance of developing DMD while female children have a 50% of becoming carriers as well.
Since DMD has no cure at this time and mutates frequently, screening for the disease before birth is extremely important. Prenatal testing can uncover DMD approximately 95% of the time.
The Grant C. Alexander Scholarship Foundation works to educate people about DMD. They offer four $1,000 awards to full-time college students who have overcome a hardship in their lives. To qualify for a scholarship, you must:
